OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Terra Costs Half as Much as GPT-5.5

OpenAI announced the GPT-5.6 family on June 26, 2026: three models, Sol, Terra and Luna, released first as a limited preview. For now, only “a select group of trusted partners and organizations” can use them, through the API and Codex. OpenAI says it plans to make all three generally available “in the coming weeks,” including in ChatGPT.

The flagship Sol and its new ultra mode, which splits work across sub-agents, will get most of the attention. For small and midsize businesses, the more useful news is lower down the lineup. OpenAI says Terra performs competitively with GPT-5.5 at half the price, and that changes the math on a lot of everyday AI work.

The Three GPT-5.6 Models and Their Prices

OpenAI describes the lineup as “Sol, our flagship model; Terra, a balanced model for everyday work; and Luna, a fast and affordable model.” In its words, “Terra has competitive performance to GPT-5.5 while being 2x cheaper and Luna brings strong capability at our lowest cost.”

Launch pricing per million tokens (input / output):

  • Sol: $5 / $30
  • Terra: $2.50 / $15
  • Luna: $1 / $6

Luna costs one fifth of Sol on both input and output. OpenAI also says the number in the name marks the model generation, while the three names are “durable capability tiers” that can be updated on their own schedules.

Sol, Ultra Mode, and the Narrow Preview

Sol gets two new options: a “max” reasoning effort that gives it the most time to think, and an ultra mode that uses subagents to take on complex work faster than a single agent could. OpenAI says Sol sets a new state of the art on Terminal-Bench 2.1, a test of multi-step command-line work, and calls it its “most capable model yet for cybersecurity.”

That cybersecurity strength is why the rollout is narrow. OpenAI says it previewed its plans and the models’ capabilities with the U.S. government, and “at their request” started with a limited group of partners before a wider release. It also says Sol ships with the strongest safeguards it has released so far, and warns that preview users may see some legitimate requests blocked or slowed while those safeguards are tuned.

Where Cheaper Models Help a Small Business

AI-Assisted Content Costs Less, if Your Process Was Already Sound

If you run a content workflow on GPT-5.5, OpenAI’s own comparison says Terra can do similar work at half the model cost. The strategy stays the same, though. Publishing more without editorial oversight still runs straight into Google’s scaled content abuse policy. But if AI handles research, outlines, and first drafts while a person who knows the subject writes and revises the final version, the AI part of that process just got cheaper.

Spend the savings on deeper research and more revision per post, not on twice as many posts. More posts at the same quality puts your rankings at risk; better posts protect them.

Customer Service and Sales Automation Get Easier to Justify

Some workflows were borderline on cost at older prices: a site chatbot that answers specific questions, email triage that routes leads to the right person, follow-ups drafted from a knowledge base. At Luna’s prices, workflows that call the model many times per customer conversation look a lot more affordable.

That doesn’t mean every business needs a chatbot. Plenty of small business sites don’t have the traffic to justify building and maintaining one. But if you were quoted a project that felt expensive because of AI usage costs, that quote was based on older model pricing. Once GPT-5.6 is generally available, it’s fair to ask for a new number.

Agent Features Are Coming to the Tools You Already Use

Most business owners won’t use ultra mode directly. The software you already pay for will. A model that can split a task among sub-agents can handle something like “review this contract, put the key dates on our calendar, draft a summary for the client, and flag anything unusual” as one job instead of four prompts.

Expect CRMs, marketing platforms, and project management tools to start advertising “agentic” features built on models like Sol. Some will save real time. Others will be a new label on an old feature. Judge them by the specific bottleneck they remove from your week, not by the demo.

What a Cheaper Model Won’t Fix

A cheaper model doesn’t change how Google ranks pages or whether your content is worth reading. It doesn’t touch the fundamentals of local SEO, technical SEO, or link building. If your site has structural problems, no model will solve them.

Moving to Terra or Luna saves money, but it doesn’t raise quality. If your workflow produced thin summaries before, it will produce cheaper thin summaries now. Model choice is one variable. Subject-matter expertise, editing, brand voice, and the SEO plan the content serves matter more.

Three Questions to Ask Before GPT-5.6 Reaches Your Tools

  1. Which model do your vendors use? If a tool you pay for runs on OpenAI models, ask what it uses today, whether it plans to move to Terra or Luna, and whether your pricing will reflect the lower cost. If it runs on Claude, Gemini, or an open model, ask how cost and quality compare for your use. Most vendors won’t volunteer this.
  2. Are you tempted to publish more because tokens got cheaper? If a “30 blog posts a month” pitch didn’t make sense at GPT-5.5 prices, Luna won’t fix it. Google’s spam policies don’t care how cheap the model was. Spend the savings on quality per piece, not on more pieces.
  3. Which tier fits each job? Right now, only the preview partners have access. When the wider rollout arrives, check which tier your tools default to. Sol is priced for hard reasoning and complex agent work. For most writing and customer communication, start by testing Terra.

Why Terra and Luna Matter More Than Sol

Sol and ultra mode get the headlines. For small and midsize businesses, the news is that a model OpenAI says is competitive with GPT-5.5 now costs half as much, and a faster tier costs less again. That makes well-designed AI workflows cheaper. A poorly designed one just gets cheaper, and the rules that decide whether your content ranks are the same as they were last week.
